There are many myths about back pain that you may have heard before and thought they were true.

Unfortunately, a lot of these myths can lead to even more pain and slow down your recovery.

Here are 5 of the most damaging, and widespread myths you should know about.

MYTH #1 - Rest Is Best
One of the biggest myths that we hear about back pain is that rest is the answer, and all you need to do is sit in your armchair or stay in bed and your back will fix itself. That may be true for a day or two, but beyond that, it's absolutely not true. When we shut down our activity and don't move, we're losing strength and flexibility which contributes to more mechanical problems and puts more strain on our back. Resting for long periods can lead to your discs and muscles being squeezed, which brings excruciating pain. That's why you shouldn't rest when your back hurts.
MYTH #2 - Pain Is Normal When We Get Older
Another myth we hear often is that you're bound to have pain as you get older. This is not true in general for our whole body, and especially not for our back. Over the years we do get some flexibility problems or strength imbalances that set our body mechanics back, but it's not because we're getting older. It's because there are more imbalances, so when you're getting pain it's just a sign that your body needs some help to work on those imbalances.
MYTH #3 - It Runs In My Family
People tell us that back pain runs in their family and that it's hereditary. I promise you that you're not doomed just because your parents, uncle, or sister had back pain. We help people all the time and whole families love coming to see us so they can all get better. Back pain is not genetic, so don't accept a life of suffering just because your family suffers from it too. That may be true for a day or two, but beyond that, it's absolutely not true. MYTH #4 - Working Out Is Bad For Your Back Pain
Many people came to us with back pain and said that they've tried working out but it hurt them even more, so working out must be back for their back pain. That's not true at all. The only thing that happens when you're moving more with back pain, working out, and doing certain activities is that you're challenging the mechanics of your back in a different way. If those mechanics aren't working as they should be, this leads to more pain, stiffness, and tightness you're experiencing. Being active, mobile, and doing sports is so important to our health in general and just because those things are hurting at the moment, it doesn't mean they're bad for your back. You just need some help to know how to exercise to feel good and reduce the pain.
MYTH #5 - I'm Doomed To Have Back Pain Because Of My Weight
Another thing that really upsets us is that people think that they're doomed to have back pain because of their weight. That's a really old belief from 50+ years ago and it's been disproved so often in the literature and in the research. Unfortunately, I still hear doctors telling their patients this myth. Usually, there are mechanical issues with your body, its flexibility and strength, and that's why you're most likely experiencing back pain. We help people with those problems all the time and a few pounds is not going to make you or break you.
